A major steel manufacturing enterprise in Hebei Province planned to upgrade its existing smelting workshop to expand molten steel output and improve operational safety. The onsite old ladle cranes suffered from unstable load-bearing performance, single safety configuration and low intelligent level, which could no longer match the factory’s 24-hour continuous high-load smelting production rhythm and restricted capacity expansion.
After field investigation and technical comparison of multiple manufacturers, the client finally selected Weihua to undertake the customized ladle crane upgrading project. This project delivered a total of 5 sets of 320t industrial-grade ladle cranes, including 3 sets of 320/80/15t cranes with 25m span and 2 sets of 320/80/15t cranes with 31m span. All equipment completed factory pre-testing, on-site installation, commissioning and trial operation, and has been officially put into formal molten steel lifting and metallurgical circulating production. The whole batch of 320t steel mill ladle crane has solved the long-standing problems of low operating efficiency and insufficient safety redundancy of the original equipment, realizing stable and efficient turnover of high-temperature molten steel ladles.


On-Site Operational Problems
Before the renovation, the client’s smelting workshop faced multiple practical bottlenecks in ladle hoisting operation, which were common pain points for old steel plant production lines:
- Poor structural stability under heavy load: Traditional double-girder cranes had limited overall rigidity. Under long-term full-load and impact load working conditions in high-temperature and high-dust workshops, structural deformation and mechanical failures occurred frequently, affecting continuous production.
- Insufficient safety redundancy design: The original electrical control system adopted a single-circuit design. Once key mechanisms or electrical components failed, the equipment would shut down directly, causing production interruption and bringing major safety risks to high-temperature molten steel operation.
- Relied on manual inspection for maintenance: The old equipment had no real-time operating condition monitoring and fault early warning functions. Equipment aging, vibration abnormalities and temperature overrun could only be found through regular manual inspection, resulting in delayed troubleshooting and high hidden danger rate.
- Single span cannot match workshop layout: The newly renovated smelting workshop has multi-area partition operation requirements. The original single-span cranes could not cover all operation areas, resulting in unreasonable hoisting routes and low ladle turnover efficiency.
Customized Ladle Crane Solution
Combined with the actual working conditions of high temperature, high dust, frequent starting and 24-hour uninterrupted full-load operation of the client’s metallurgical workshop, Weihua launched a targeted customized metallurgical ladle crane solution. Different from ordinary workshop cranes, this batch of ladle cranes adopts professional four-girder and four-rail structural design for metallurgy, with enhanced load-bearing and impact resistance. Meanwhile, matched redundant control system and full intelligent monitoring system are configured to fully meet the strict safety and continuous production standards of steel smelting working conditions. Two different span specifications are designed for zoning operation to adapt to the client’s new workshop layout.
Mechanical Structure & On-Site Adaptability Advantages
The four-girder and four-rail main structure adopted by the equipment effectively improves the overall rigidity and stability of the crane, with small structural deformation under long-term heavy load, which is more suitable for frequent molten steel hoisting operations compared with traditional double-girder structures. The main reducer adopts reinforced structural optimization design, with stable transmission performance and strong anti-fatigue ability, adapting to frequent start-stop working conditions of smelting workshops and reducing mechanical failure probability.
In terms of walking configuration, the main wheel and trolley wheel adopt interchangeable design, which greatly reduces the client’s later spare parts reserve pressure and daily maintenance cost. The trolley is equipped with four-wheel drive, which provides sufficient traction to avoid slipping and derailment during full-load operation. All structural parameters are verified by finite element stress analysis to ensure long-term safe and stable operation under impact load and high-temperature environment.
Intelligent Electrical Control & Safety Monitoring System
Aiming at the high-risk characteristics of molten steel hoisting, the equipment is equipped with a complete set of industrial-grade intelligent control and safety protection systems to realize whole-process controllable operation:
- Redundant backup control system: Dual-circuit redundant control is adopted for key operating mechanisms. When a single component or mechanism fails, the system can automatically and quickly switch to the backup control loop without stopping the machine, realizing 365-day uninterrupted safe production and avoiding economic losses caused by equipment shutdown.
- Multi-scene safety early warning mechanism: Built-in smoke detection sensor, workshop safe operation area limit protection and remote wireless intercom function. It can realize real-time early warning of potential risks, standardize operation areas, and support remote real-time communication between ground operators and drivers to avoid safety accidents caused by misoperation.
- Full-life equipment health detection system: It supports real-time online monitoring of core operating data such as reducer vibration, motor operating temperature and electrical circuit status. The system automatically records and analyzes operating data and fault information, helps maintenance personnel accurately locate hidden faults, realizes predictive maintenance, and effectively reduces equipment downtime and failure rate.

Project Result
After the project was fully put into production, all 5 ladle cranes operated stably under long-term full-load working conditions. The optimized mechanical structure completely solves the problems of structural instability and frequent failures of traditional equipment. The matching redundant control system eliminates unplanned shutdowns, while the intelligent health monitoring system changes the traditional passive maintenance mode to predictive maintenance, effectively reducing enterprise operation and maintenance costs and improving equipment operation rate.
The two-span customized design perfectly fits the partition layout of the new smelting workshop, optimizes the ladle hoisting and turnover route, and significantly improves the efficiency of molten steel circulation. The overall production continuity and stability of the workshop are greatly improved, providing reliable equipment guarantee for the client’s stable production and capacity upgrading.
